Writing About Yourself

Writing Beginner ~2 min

Write simple sentences about yourself: name, age, job, hobbies, and where you're from.

📖 Lesson

What You Will Learn

You'll learn to write basic sentences about yourself using the present simple tense. This is super useful for social media, introductions, emails, and job applications.

Explanation

When you introduce yourself in writing, you use "I am" (I'm) for things that don't change, and "I work" / "I live" / "I like" for what you do now.

Think about it: when you fill out a form at a doctor's office or write a message on a dating app, you're describing yourself. That's what we're practicing today.

The basic structure is simple:
- Subject (I) + Verb + Information

Examples

About identity and family:
- My name is Ahmed. I'm 28 years old.
- I'm from Egypt, but I live in London now.

About work and studies:
- I'm an engineer. I work for a tech company.
- I'm a student. I study business at university.

About hobbies and interests:
- I like football and cooking.
- I enjoy reading books and playing guitar.

Real situation - WhatsApp message to a new friend:
"Hi! I'm Maria. I'm 25 and I'm a nurse in Madrid. I love hiking and coffee. Nice to meet you!"

Common Mistakes

I am work as a doctor. → ✅ I work as a doctor. (Don't use "am" with other verbs)

I'm like pizza. → ✅ I like pizza. (Don't use "I'm" before "like")

I am from Spain and live in Barcelona. (Correct, but sounds stiff) → ✅ I'm from Spain and live in Barcelona. (Use contractions in writing — it's more natural)

Quick Tips

Keep it short — 3-4 sentences is perfect for an introduction
Use contractions — "I'm", "I've", "don't" — they sound more natural
Be honest — people can tell when you're pretending
Use connecting words — "and", "but" — to link ideas together
