📖 Lesson

Describing People: Appearance and Personality

When we meet someone new or want to describe a friend, we need vocabulary for both physical appearance and personality. This lesson teaches you practical words to describe people in English.

Physical Appearance

When describing how someone looks, we often talk about:

Hair
- Long, short, curly, straight, wavy, dark, blonde, brown, red, black
- Example: "She has long, curly brown hair."

Height and Build
- Tall, short, average height, slim, thin, fat, overweight, muscular, athletic
- Example: "He is tall and muscular."

Face and Features
- Round face, square face, oval face, big eyes, small nose, freckles
- Example: "She has a round face and big blue eyes."

Age
- Young, old, middle-aged, elderly
- Example: "He looks about 30 years old."

Personality Traits

Positive Personality Traits
- Friendly, kind, helpful, honest, intelligent, creative, funny, polite, patient, brave, confident
- Example: "My grandmother is very kind and patient with children."

Negative Personality Traits
- Rude, dishonest, lazy, angry, shy, nervous, impatient, mean, proud
- Example: "He can be impatient when things don't work quickly."

How to Make Descriptions

What to describe Adjective Example
Hair long, curly, blonde She has long, curly blonde hair
Body slim, athletic, tall He is tall and athletic
Face round, kind, beautiful She has a kind, beautiful face
Personality friendly, funny, honest He is very friendly and funny
Age young, old, middle-aged She looks young for her age

Useful Sentence Structures

For appearance:
- "She has + [adjectives] + [body part]" → She has beautiful green eyes.
- "He is + [adjectives]" → He is tall and athletic.
- "She looks + [adjective]" → She looks young.

For personality:
- "He/She is + [personality adjective]" → She is very friendly.
- "He/She can be + [personality adjective]" → He can be impatient.
- "People say + subject + is + [adjective]" → People say she is intelligent.

Common Mistakes to Avoid

Mistake 1: Using "has" with personality
- ❌ "He has friendly"
- ✅ "He is friendly"

Mistake 2: Forgetting articles
- ❌ "She has long hair and brown eyes"
- ✅ "She has long hair and brown eyes" (actually this is correct!)
- ❌ "She is tall woman"
- ✅ "She is a tall woman"

Mistake 3: Wrong word order
- ❌ "She has hair long blonde"
- ✅ "She has long blonde hair"

Practice Tips

  1. Describe people you know. Choose a friend or family member and write 3-4 sentences describing their appearance and personality.

  2. Watch and describe. When watching films or TV, try to describe characters using new vocabulary.

  3. Use mirrors. Describe yourself! It helps you practice with real, personal vocabulary.

  4. Make a vocabulary wall. Write adjectives on cards and group them: appearance, personality, positive, negative.

  5. Create pairs. Match appearance adjectives with personality adjectives to create full descriptions.

Real Example

Let's describe a person completely:

"My best friend Sarah is 25 years old. She is tall and slim with long, straight dark hair. She has a round face and beautiful brown eyes. Sarah is very friendly and kind to everyone. She is intelligent and creative, and people love her sense of humor. She can sometimes be impatient with slow work, but her positive personality makes her special."
