The Present Continuous Tense
The present continuous tense describes actions that are happening right now at this moment. It shows something in progress.
Form and Structure
The present continuous uses two parts:

Formula: Subject + am/is/are + verb + -ing
How to Form the -ing Form
Most verbs: add -ing
- walk → walking
- eat → eating
- read → reading
Verbs ending in 'e': remove 'e' and add -ing
- make → making
- take → taking
- write → writing
Short verbs with one vowel: double the last consonant and add -ing
- run → running
- sit → sitting
- swim → swimming
Examples in Context
Right now:
- Maria is studying English. (She is in the process of studying at this moment)
- The children are playing in the park. (They are playing now)
- I am writing a message to my friend. (I am writing now)
- Tom is not watching TV. He is reading a book. (One action is happening, the other is not)
Questions:
- What are you doing? I am cooking dinner.
- Is she sleeping? No, she is watching a film.
- Are they coming to the party? Yes, they are arriving at 7 pm.
Common Mistakes to Avoid
❌ Wrong: He are playing football.
✓ Correct: He is playing football. (He is singular, so use 'is')
❌ Wrong: They am eating dinner.
✓ Correct: They are eating dinner. (They is plural, so use 'are')
❌ Wrong: She is work in the office.
✓ Correct: She is working in the office. (Don't forget the -ing form)
❌ Wrong: What you are doing?
✓ Correct: What are you doing? (In questions, the auxiliary verb comes first)
Present Continuous vs Present Simple
Use present continuous for actions happening right now:
- He is playing football. (He is playing at this moment)
Use present simple for habits and routines:
- He plays football every Saturday. (He plays regularly as a habit)
Practice Tips
- Listen carefully: When someone is talking, try to identify if they are using present continuous. Listen for the pattern am/is/are + -ing.
- Describe your actions: Throughout your day, try to describe what you are doing right now using present continuous.
- Watch and describe: Look at photos or videos and describe what the people are doing in each picture.
- Create sentences: Take any verb and practice adding -ing. Make 5 sentences about things you and your friends are doing today.
