Reading: A Simple Recipe

Reading Elementary ~2 min

You'll understand a simple recipe in English and answer questions about ingredients and instructions.

📖 Lesson

What You Will Learn

Reading recipes is a practical skill you use every day. In this lesson, you'll learn how to read and understand a simple English recipe, identify ingredients, and follow cooking instructions.

Explanation (with real-life context)

Recipes use special vocabulary and a clear structure. They tell you:
- What you need (ingredients)
- How much (quantities)
- What to do (instructions)

When you cook at home, order food online, or follow cooking videos, you're reading recipes. Understanding them helps you cook successfully and even chat with friends about food!

Examples (natural sentences from daily life)

Let's look at a simple recipe:

Tomato Pasta (Serves 2)

Ingredients:
- 300g pasta
- 2 tomatoes
- 1 onion
- 2 cloves garlic
- Salt and pepper
- Olive oil

Instructions:
1. Boil water in a large pot.
2. Add salt and pasta. Cook for 10 minutes.
3. Cut the onion and tomatoes into small pieces.
4. Heat olive oil in a pan. Add garlic and onion.
5. Cook for 2 minutes until soft.
6. Add tomatoes and cook for 5 minutes.
7. Drain the pasta and mix with the sauce.
8. Serve hot.

Key phrases you'll see:
- "Boil water" = heat water until it bubbles
- "Drain" = remove water
- "Serve" = give food to people
- "Heat" = make warm

Common Mistakes

Confusing "boil" and "burn" — Boiling is normal cooking with heat and water. Burning means cooking too long.

Missing quantities — Always check "how much" before cooking. "Add salt" is different from "Add 2 tablespoons salt."

Not reading the steps in order — Recipes have steps for a reason. Step 1 comes before step 5!

Quick Tips

✅ Read the whole recipe before you start cooking

✅ Check ingredient quantities and cooking times

✅ Use a dictionary for cooking words you don't know
