The verb to be has three main uses:

  • Location: The book is on the table

The Present Tense of "To Be"

The verb "to be" changes depending on the subject. Here are all the forms:

Simple Examples

Affirmative (positive) sentences:
- I am happy
- You are intelligent

Questions:
Move the verb before the subject:

Common Mistakes to Avoid

Mistake 1: Using the wrong form
- ❌ "He are happy" → ✓ "He is happy"
- ❌ "They am students" → ✓ "They are students"

Mistake 2: Forgetting "to be" in sentences
- ❌ "I happy" → ✓ "I am happy"
- ❌ "She teacher" → ✓ "She is a teacher"

Mistake 3: Using contractions in formal writing
- ❌ (in formal letter) "I'm writing to you" → ✓ "I am writing to you"
- ✓ (in text message) "I'm here! Where r u?"

Practice Tips

  1. Repeat out loud: Say sentences with "to be" every day. Listen to native speakers.
