Writing About Your Weekend

Writing Elementary ~2 min

Write simple, natural sentences about your weekend using past tense and time expressions correctly.

📖 Lesson

What You Will Learn

You'll learn how to describe your weekend activities using past tense verbs and time expressions. By the end, you can write 3-4 sentences that tell someone what you did.

Explanation (with real-life context)

When you text a friend or post on WhatsApp about your weekend, you need two things:

  1. Past tense verbs — because the weekend already happened
  2. Time expressions — to say when you did things

Think about it: you're not saying "I go to the market." You're saying "I went to the market on Saturday morning." That's what makes it feel natural.

Examples (natural sentences from daily life)

Good weekend messages:
- "On Saturday, I went to the beach with my friends. We played football for two hours."
- "Yesterday morning, I cleaned my house and cooked lunch for my family."
- "Last Sunday, I visited my grandmother. We watched a movie together and drank tea."
- "I didn't do much this weekend. I stayed home and studied English!"

Time expressions to use:
- On Saturday / Sunday
- Yesterday morning / afternoon / evening
- Last weekend
- In the morning / afternoon

Common Mistakes

❌ "I go to the park on Sunday" (wrong — you already did it!)
✅ "I went to the park on Sunday" (correct — past tense)

❌ "I watched TV Saturday" (incomplete — sounds rushed)
✅ "On Saturday, I watched TV" (correct — sounds natural)

❌ "I did nothing" (too negative for most situations)
✅ "I relaxed at home" (more positive and specific)

Quick Tips

  • Start with the day: "On Saturday," "Yesterday," "Last weekend"
  • Use simple past: walked, went, played, watched, cooked, cleaned
  • Add details: "I played football with my friends for two hours"
  • Mix activities: mention 2-3 different things you did
  • Be honest: "I didn't do much" is fine! Everyone has quiet weekends
