Listening: Simple Instructions

Listening Beginner ~2 min

Understand and follow basic English instructions in everyday situations like cooking, directions, and workplace tasks.

📖 Lesson

What You Will Learn

You'll learn to listen carefully and understand simple instructions that people give you every day. This is super practical — whether someone's telling you how to use a machine, giving you directions, or explaining a task at work.

Explanation (with real-life context)

Instructions are everywhere. Your boss says, "Please send me the report by 5 PM." A friend says, "Turn left at the traffic light." A recipe video says, "Mix the eggs and sugar together."

When you listen to instructions, you need to focus on:
- Action verbs — the doing words (open, close, turn, press, mix)
- Order — what comes first, second, third
- Details — numbers, directions, specific items

The good news? Instructions use simple, repeated patterns. Once you recognize them, you'll feel confident!

Examples (natural sentences from daily life)

At a coffee shop:
- "Please make a cappuccino with extra foam."
- "Can you add two sugars and a little milk?"

At work:
- "Open the document, read the email, and reply by noon."
- "First, check the inventory. Then, update the spreadsheet."

Getting directions:
- "Go straight. Turn right at the supermarket. It's on your left."
- "Walk past the bank, then take the second street."

Following a recipe:
- "Beat the eggs. Add the flour slowly. Don't mix too fast."

Common Mistakes

Trying to understand every single word. You don't need to! Focus on the action verbs and key words.

Not listening for the order. Instructions are step-by-step. Missing "first" or "then" = missing the whole point.

Feeling rushed. In real life, it's totally okay to say, "Can you say that again, please?" or "Can you repeat the last part?"

Quick Tips

Listen for the verb — that's the action you need to do.

Listen for numbers and directions — they matter!

Ask questions — "Do you mean...?" or "Should I do this before or after?"

Repeat back — "So I should turn left, then right?" This confirms you understood correctly.
