Shopping Conversations in English
Ask for prices, describe what you want, and handle money conversations naturally at shops and markets.
📖 Lesson
What You Will Learn
You'll learn how to ask questions at a shop, describe what you want, and talk about prices like a real customer. These are the conversations you actually need when shopping!
Explanation (with real-life context)
Shopping conversations follow a simple pattern. You walk in, you ask for something, the shopkeeper helps you, and you pay. But here's the trick — native speakers don't use fancy grammar. They use short, natural phrases.
When you arrive: "Hi, do you have...?" or "I'm looking for..."
When you want details: "How much is this?" (not "What is the price?" — that sounds like a textbook)
When something's too expensive: "That's a bit expensive. Do you have anything cheaper?"
Notice: we say "How much?" not "How many money?" English speakers never say that!
Examples (natural sentences from daily life)
• Asking for something: "Do you have this in a larger size?"
• Asking the price: "How much does this cost?" or "How much is it?"
• Checking quality: "Is this organic?" or "Can I try this on?"
• Negotiating gently: "Your other shop had it for £15. Can you match that?"
• Polite refusal: "Actually, that's too much for me. Thanks anyway."
Common Mistakes
❌ "What is the price of this?" (too formal, wrong stress)
✅ "How much is this?" (natural, what real people say)
❌ "I want to see red ones" (sounds demanding)
✅ "Can I see the red ones?" (polite, normal)
❌ "Do you have this product in stock?" (too business-like)
✅ "Do you have this in black?" (natural)
Quick Tips
• Use "Do you have...?" to ask if something exists at the shop
• "How much?" is always acceptable — native speakers use it constantly
• "Can I...?" is your best friend for polite requests: "Can I try this?" "Can I pay by card?"
• In UK shops, say "mate" or "thanks" at the end — it sounds friendly, not weird
• Listen for: "Anything else?" This means they're ready to wrap up your shopping
