Classroom and School Vocabulary

Welcome to your first vocabulary lesson! In this lesson, you will learn important words for talking about your classroom and school. These words are used every day in English-speaking schools.

The Classroom

A classroom is a room where students learn with a teacher. Let's learn the basic objects and furniture you find in a classroom:

English Description
desk A table where students sit and write
chair Furniture you sit on
board A dark surface where teachers write with chalk or markers
book Object with pages that contains information or stories
pen A tool you use to write with ink
pencil A tool you use to write with graphite
eraser A tool used to remove pencil marks
paper Thin material you write on
window Glass opening that lets light into the room
door An entrance to the classroom

Common Classroom Activities

In a classroom, students do many activities:
- Read - look at and understand written words
- Write - make letters and words on paper
- Listen - pay attention to what the teacher says
- Speak - use your voice to say words
- Learn - gain new knowledge and skills
- Study - spend time learning something carefully

School Locations

A school has many different places:

  • Classroom - where lessons happen
  • Library - where books are kept
  • Cafeteria - where students eat lunch
  • Gymnasium - where students do sports and physical education
  • Playground - outside area for games and play
  • Office - where the headmaster or principal works
  • Hallway - passage connecting different rooms

School People

You meet different people at school:

  • Teacher - the person who teaches the class
  • Student - a person who learns at school
  • Classmate - another student in your class
  • Principal or Headmaster - the leader of the school

Common Mistakes

Wrong: "I go to the school every day."
Correct: "I go to school every day."
(We don't use "the" before "school" when talking about going there to study)

Wrong: "I sit in a desk."
Correct: "I sit at a desk."
(We use "at" with desks and tables)

Wrong: "The teacher learn us English."
Correct: "The teacher teaches us English."
(Teachers teach students; students learn)

Practice Tips

  1. Label your classroom - Write English words on labels and stick them on objects in your real classroom
  2. Describe your day - Use these words to tell someone about your school day
  3. Draw and label - Draw a classroom and label all the objects
  4. Make flashcards - Write the English word on one side and the picture on the other
  5. Speak out loud - Say the words and sentences many times

Example Sentences

  • "My classroom has twenty desks and twenty chairs."
  • "I write with a pen and pencil."
  • "The teacher is in the office."
  • "We read books in the library."
  • "I study English every day at school."
  • "My classmates and I play on the playground."
