Sports and Hobbies

Vocabulary Elementary ~2 min

Talk about sports and hobbies you enjoy and understand what others are interested in doing.

📖 Lesson

What You Will Learn

You'll learn the names of popular sports and hobbies, and how to talk about what you do in your free time. This is perfect for making friends, small talk at work, or understanding what people around you enjoy!

Explanation (with real-life context)

When you meet someone new — whether it's a colleague at work, a neighbor, or someone on a dating app — one of the first things people ask is: "What do you do in your free time?" Knowing how to answer this naturally is super useful.

Sports are organized activities (football, tennis, swimming), while hobbies are things you do for pleasure (reading, drawing, cooking). Notice: we say "I play football" but "I do yoga" or "I go swimming."

The pattern matters! You'll hear:
- Play + ball sports: play basketball, play volleyball
- Do + individual activities: do yoga, do karate
- Go + activities ending in -ing: go running, go hiking, go cycling

Examples (natural sentences from daily life)

"What's your hobby?"
"I play guitar and I go running three times a week."

"Do you play any sports?"
"Yeah, I do swimming on weekends. It's very relaxing!"

WhatsApp message: "Hey! Wanna go hiking next Sunday? The weather looks amazing 😊"

Job interview small talk: "So, how do you spend your free time?"
"I'm really into photography. I take pictures every weekend."

Common Mistakes

❌ "I play yoga" — No! Say "I do yoga"
❌ "I go football" — No! Say "I play football"
❌ "I hobby is cooking" — No! Say "My hobby is cooking"
❌ "I interested in dance" — No! Say "I'm interested in dancing" or "I like to dance"

Quick Tips

  • Use the present simple: "I play tennis every Saturday" (not "I am playing")
  • Add frequency words: often, usually, sometimes, never = "I usually go cycling"
  • Ask back: "What about you?" sounds natural and friendly
  • Be specific: Instead of just "I like sports," say what kind — people connect better!
