You'll understand common signs and notices in English-speaking environments and know what to do in real situations.

📖 Lesson

What You Will Learn

In this lesson, you'll learn to read and understand signs and notices you see every day. These are the short messages on doors, walls, and signs that tell you what to do or what's happening. By the end, you'll know how to:

  • Recognize common signs at shops, restaurants, and public places
  • Understand what signs tell you to do or not do
  • Read notices quickly and know what action to take

Explanation (with Real-Life Context)

Signs and notices are short written messages that give you information or instructions. They're different from conversations or long texts — they're quick, direct, and usually tell you something important RIGHT NOW.

Why do we need to read signs?

  • Safety: "DANGER! Hot water" tells you not to touch something
  • Rules: "No smoking" tells you what's not allowed
  • Information: "Open 9am-6pm" tells you when a shop is open
  • Instructions: "Push" or "Pull" tells you how to open a door

Think about your day: You probably see 10-20 signs before lunch! A "CLOSED" sign on a coffee shop. "WiFi password: cafe123" on a wall. "Please queue here" at a supermarket. These signs help the world work smoothly.

Examples (Real-Life Situations)

At a Coffee Shop

Sign on the door: "OPEN 7am-9pm Monday-Friday"

What does it mean? The coffee shop is open during these hours. If you come at 10pm, it's closed.

Notice on the counter: "Please order here" with an arrow →

What does it mean? You need to go to that spot to order coffee.

Sign on a cup holder: "HOT! Be careful"

What does it mean? The cup is hot. Don't touch it without a sleeve.

At a Train Station

Sign above tracks: "Platform 3 → London"

What does it mean? If you want to go to London, use Platform 3.

Notice on a wall: "No entry. Staff only."

What does it mean? You cannot go through that door unless you work here.

Sign on luggage: "Fragile — Handle with care"

What does it mean? This package has something delicate inside. Be gentle!

At a Gym

Sign on locker room door: "Members only"

What does it mean? Only people who pay for gym membership can use this area.

Notice on equipment: "OUT OF ORDER"

What does it mean? This machine is broken. You cannot use it.

Sign above shoes: "Remove shoes — Please wear gym shoes"

What does it mean? Take off your street shoes and wear proper gym shoes.

At a Library

Sign on bookshelves: "QUIET PLEASE — Reading area"

What does it mean? Don't talk loudly. This is a place for reading.

Notice on wall: "Library cards required to borrow books"

What does it mean? You need a special card. You cannot borrow books without it.

At a Restaurant

Sign on door: "Closed for private event — Come back tomorrow!"

What does it mean? The restaurant is not open to regular customers today.

Notice on menu: "★ Vegetarian option available"

What does it mean? This dish has a version without meat.

Sign in bathroom: "Wash your hands before eating"

What does it mean? It's important for health. Do this before you eat.

Common Mistakes

Mistake 1: Not reading the full sign

❌ Wrong: You see "OPEN" but miss the times written below

You arrive at 11pm, but the sign says "OPEN 9am-9pm"

✓ Right: Read ALL the words on the sign, not just the biggest ones

Mistake 2: Confusing "Do" and "Don't"

❌ Wrong: Seeing "No smoking" and thinking it means you CAN smoke

✓ Right: "No" = prohibition. "No smoking" = smoking is not allowed

Other examples:
- "No running" = don't run
- "No touching" = don't touch
- "No entry" = don't go in

Mistake 3: Ignoring small details

❌ Wrong: Assuming a coffee shop is open every day at the same time

The sign says "Mon-Fri 9am-6pm, Sat 10am-4pm, Closed Sunday" but you only notice "9am-6pm"

✓ Right: Look for days of the week and times — they're often different!

Mistake 4: Not understanding symbols or arrows

❌ Wrong: Not understanding "→" or "↑" or "🚫"

✓ Right: Learn what these mean:
- → = go right / this way
- ↑ = go up / this way above
- 🚫 = prohibited / not allowed
- ⚠️ = warning / be careful

Mistake 5: Reading too slowly

Signs should be read FAST. You don't need perfect comprehension — you just need to know "Do I do this or not?"

❌ Wrong: Spending 2 minutes trying to understand every word on a "PUSH" sign

✓ Right: See "PUSH", push the door. Done in 1 second.

Quick Tips

  1. Read top to bottom, left to right — Just like normal English text

  2. Look for ACTION words — DO, DON'T, PLEASE, WARNING, DANGER
    - These tell you what to do or not do

  3. Check for TIME and DAYS — Signs often have different rules for different times
    - "Open Mon-Fri 9-5" is different from "Always open"

  4. Look for PROHIBITED symbols — 🚫 or "NO" or "DON'T"
    - These mean "stop, don't do this"

  5. Pay attention to WARNINGS — ⚠️ "HOT", "DANGER", "FRAGILE"
    - These keep you safe

  6. Notice ARROWS and DIRECTIONS — → ↑ ↓
    - They show you where to go

  7. Speed is okay — You don't need to understand every word
    - Just get the main message: "YES, I can do this" or "NO, I cannot"

Practice

Activity 1: Match the sign to the meaning

Sign Meaning
CLOSED This area is only for workers
OPEN 9-5 Don't touch this
STAFF ONLY The place is not open now
DO NOT TOUCH The business is open from 9 in the morning to 5 in the afternoon

Activity 2: What should you do?

  1. You see a sign that says "Push" on a door. What do you do?
    - A) Pull the door
    - B) Push the door
    - C) Wait for someone to open it

  2. A sign says "No running." Can children run in this area?
    - A) Yes, anytime
    - B) No, running is not allowed
    - C) Only on Saturdays

  3. The sign shows "→ Exit this way". Where is the exit?
    - A) To the left
    - B) To the right
    - C) Upstairs

  4. You see "OPEN 10am-8pm Mon-Fri, CLOSED Sat-Sun". When is the shop open on Saturday?
    - A) 10am-8pm
    - B) It's not open
    - C) Only in the morning
