IELTS Listening — Gap Fill Questions
Gap fill is one of the most common Listening question types. You hear information once and must complete gaps with 1, 2, or 3 words as instructed.
Before the Recording Plays
You get 30–45 seconds to read the questions. Use every second.
What to do:
1. Read all the gaps carefully
2. Predict the type of word you need (noun? number? adjective?)
3. Underline key words around each gap — these are your listening anchors
Predicting the Answer Type
| Gap sentence | Prediction |
|---|---|
| "The cost of the trip is ____" | A number / price |
| "Bring a ____ in case it rains" | A noun (object) |
| "The museum is open ____ to Saturday" | A day of the week |
| "The speaker felt ____ after the event" | An adjective |
Listening for Signal Words
IELTS speakers often paraphrase the question before giving the answer. Listen for:
- Corrections: "actually… I mean… sorry, it's…"
- Emphasis: "the key point is… the most important thing is…"
When you hear these, the answer is usually coming next.
Spelling Rules
Your answers MUST be spelled correctly to get the mark.
- Numbers: Write digits (45) or words (forty-five) — both are usually accepted
- Hyphenated words: part-time, well-known — check the word limit
- Plurals: Listen for -s carefully
What to Do If You Miss an Answer
Move on immediately. Write your best guess and continue. The recording does not stop.
After the Recording
You have 10 extra minutes at the end of the Listening test to transfer your answers. Use this time to:
1. Check spelling carefully
2. Check word limits
3. Check plurals
- Use pre-listening time to predict the type of answer (number, noun, day, etc.).
- Underline the words around each gap — they are your listening anchors.
- Speakers often paraphrase; do not wait to hear the exact words from the question.
- Spelling must be correct — one spelling error loses the mark.
- If you miss an answer, skip it immediately and focus on the next one.
- Use the 10-minute transfer time to check spelling and word limits.
